Dog Pageants

The dog competition, also called a pageant, is a competition in which dogs are judged according to breed standards. Essentially, it’s like a beauty pageant for dogs to determine which dog is the best specimen.

Pageants seem to benefit dog moms more than dogs. “Doggie moms” carry their dressed-up toy dogs around in their handbags. Several times a year they meet through their dogs, usually for animal-related charity events, and every time they dress their dogs in gaudy, expensive outfits.

To provide this crowd with ever more clothing and accessories, pet fashion designers and pet stylists have emerged. Doggie Moms are often viewed as stage mothers in this business where designers compete and the dogs are in the spotlight. In the same way as the kid’s pageants, if the focus is on the dogs, isn’t the show about their mothers?

A dog pageant involves the competition of dogs who are judged according to the standards established for the breed they belong to. In a way, it’s similar to a beauty pageant for dogs, where you find out which dog is the best among the bunch.

A dog show will usually consist of handlers presenting dogs and judges observing and scoring them based on physical characteristics, like gait and teeth, as well as behavior and obedience. Award categories include “best of breed” and “best of the show” (best in the show).

Though it is the dogs who are judged, the competition is also believed to be among the handlers and caregivers as well, who raise the dogs and prepare them for the shows. What is the most common way people “show off” their dogs?

A dog show is an event in which pet owners show off their canine friends, and the event provides a large audience that is primed for admiring the beauty of this canine kingdom. Dog shows are informal gatherings of dogs and their owners/handlers in an environment of competition between dogs and their owners/handlers.

A breed standard is evaluated by how well it fits a dog and how well it is pampered, pranced, and displayed. Breed Standards are written descriptions of what a perfect dog of a certain breed should look like. The American Kennel Club (AKC) dictates them. In addition to appearance, movement, health, and temperament, it specifies the “gold standard” for each canine breed.

Each dog is “placed” by an AKC judge based on how closely it compares to its breed standard. In a dog show competition, the dog that conforms the most closely to the Breed Standard is awarded. Owners of purebred dogs are more likely to attend this type of show, but owners of mixed-breed dogs can also participate.

How do dogs qualify for a dog pageant?

Dogs that are 6 months old and registered with the AKC may compete in the show ring if they are intact purebreds. As part of the AKC’s Indefinite Listing Privilege program, non-registered purebred dogs also have the opportunity to compete and are considered purebreds regardless of their registration status.

It is possible to compete in AKC-approved events even if the dog is a mixed breed. The Canine Partners Program offers agility and obedience competitions for dogs that have been registered through the program, although they are not the traditional dog show.

Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America organizes ability-based dog shows for mutts through its national organization. There is nothing wrong with that.

What can you do to prepare your dog to be part of a dog pageant?

Doing your research before embarking on a new venture is always a good idea, especially if your pet is involved.

  • Experience a dog show for yourself. It is common for dog owners to share their experiences with newcomers.
  • Your dog must meet the standards. If you want your dog to participate in a purebred show, look at the Kennel Club Breed Standard for his/her breed. The AKC maintains a comprehensive list of breed characteristics.
  • AKC resources are available to you. You can find many useful resources on the AKC’s website by searching for local dog clubs. In Ringcraft classes, you can learn how to best present your dog at a show and train for a dog show. It’s possible to get a taste of the show ring at local events held by some clubs.
  • Become a member of a club. You can enhance your knowledge by meeting with people who share your interests and have fun, too. It is good for you and your dog to interact with other dog owners and with other dogs. Your pooch should be used to being in a crowd since there are many other dogs at shows.
  • If you need a handler, consider hiring one. Consider hiring a professional handler to show your dog if you have a wonderful pet but not a lot of time. To determine if you should hire professionals for training or showing your dog, it is necessary to check the fee schedule. Also, before you commit your dog’s health to the handler, get references and visit their facility.

It is the goal of dog pageants to promote healthy dogs in both purebred and mixed breed competitions and to bring out the best of the breed. Ensure your dog is healthy before entering the show ring so that it can withstand the rigors.

The dog pageant goes beyond the beauty contest

It may appear to the untrained eye that dog pageants are beauty contests. According to purebred enthusiasts, it’s a lot more than that. The main purpose of dog shows is to evaluate dogs for breeding. It has a profound effect on breeders’ plans for future generations of their dogs as well as on handlers’ presentation of their dogs.

Breeds are selected for a specific purpose – a Toy breed is bred to be an indoor lap dog, whereas a hound is bred to hunt wild game – and these specific functions define the breeds’ standards. A dog’s conformation to a standard is how it is evaluated by judges in the show ring.

The judging process is about defining beauty within a breed, about how a breed became what they are, and how they appear to the judge on the day.

A good judge, on the other hand, isn’t only concerned with a dog’s appearance, but also with its breed personality. In a sea of great dogs, dogs that display a breed’s true temperament can help them stand out from the crowd.
